Black Streaks, Algae, Moss and Lichen

Here are some before and after picture of a roof cleaning that we completed in Framingham MA. Notice the black discoloration and streaks. That is a form of cyanobacteria called gloeocapsa magma. Cyanobacteria is a bacteria that actually has similarities to plants in the sense that they photosynthesize. In strong light however they grow a dark casing to protect itself, this is where it gets its black appearance from. Gloeocapsa magma thrives in low light conditions, which is why its most commonly seen on the north side of your house. Like plants, gloeocapsa magma needs a food source and feeds on the limestone that is in the composition of the colored granules your shingles. The combination of the loss of granules, the black color of the bacteria, and the dark color of the asphalt causes the shingle to adsorb more of the suns rays which increases the heat that the shingles endure and leads to premature failure. Furthermore, gloeocapsa magma helps trap moisture on the roof which aids in the growth of other organisms like moss and lichen.

Rust Removal

If you look on the right hand side of the roof you will see a rusty brown discoloration. Most metal roofing materials have a coating on them to prevent the steel from rusting. But over time that can wear off, exposing the underlying steel and allowing it to rust. Its not really a problem other than being visually unappealing. This type of stain is usually fairly easy to remove but it does require the use of professional cleaning products that need proper training and safety guidelines, and should never be attempted by a home owner.
